Our new Big Hat Tipi at BrackenXcapes recently hosted its very first Shamanic Drumming session, and the experience was nothing short of magical. With a local guide named Polly leading the way, over 10 friends gathered to explore the deep rhythms and spiritual connection that shamanic drumming offers. This event marked the beginning of what we hope will become a regular offering for both our glamping guests and local community members.
What Is Shamanic Drumming?
Shamanic drumming is a practice rooted in ancient traditions where rhythmic beats guide participants into a meditative and relaxing state. The steady pulse of the drum acts as a bridge between the physical world and the spiritual realm. This form of drumming is used for healing, self-discovery, and connecting with nature or spirit guides.
Polly, our guide, explained that the drumbeat’s repetitive sound helps quiet the mind and open the heart. This allows participants to journey inward, releasing stress and gaining clarity. Unlike casual drumming, shamanic drumming follows specific rhythms and intentions designed to support spiritual work.
Preparing Our Big Hat Tipi for the Session
The Big Hat Tipi is a spacious, circular tent that creates a cosy atmosphere, perfect for immersive experiences like shamanic drumming and other well being activities. The Tipi is almost 8 metres in diameter and 10 of us were laying on comfy mattresses we had arranged, with Polly also having her space and able to walk around during the session. The tipi’s natural materials and open design helped everyone feel grounded and connected to the earth.
Before the session, we set up soft cushions and blankets for comfort. Polly smudged (using smoke) to cleanse the area and each participant and the Tipi as well. We also lit a small fire pit outside afterwards to allow guests to cast off written notes they had made during the session. The tipi’s location at BrackenXcapes offers a peaceful backdrop, surrounded by trees and the open sky, enhancing the connection to nature.
The Experience: What Happened During the Drumming Session
When everyone gathered inside the tipi, Polly began by explaining the purpose of the session and inviting participants to set personal intentions. She encouraged openness and respect for the process, reminding everyone that each journey is unique.
After a short meditation session the drumming started slowly, with deep, steady beats that gradually built in intensity. Polly guided the group through breathing exercises and visualization techniques to deepen the experience. As the rhythm grew, many participants reported feeling a shift in awareness, some describing sensations of warmth, lightness, or emotional release.
Throughout the session, Polly played various drums and rattles, weaving different sounds to maintain the flow and energy. The group remained silent except for the drumming. After about an hour, the rhythm slowed, signalling the end of the experience.
Reflections from Our Friends and Guests
After the drumming stopped, the circle opened up for sharing. Many expressed how deeply the experience felt for them. Some felt calmer and more grounded, while others described vivid colours and a sense of relaxation.

Why We Want to Offer This Experience at BrackenXcapes
Hosting this first session showed us the potential of shamanic drumming as a unique activity for our glamping guests and local visitors. It fits well with the natural, peaceful environment of BrackenXcapes and complements other outdoor and wellness experiences we offer.
We plan to schedule regular sessions led by Polly and other skilled guides. This will give guests a chance to explore shamanic drumming during their stay and invite locals to join in as well. Our goal is to create a welcoming space where people can connect with themselves, each other, and the land.
